May 26 and 27 will mark the first visit of His Majesty King Charles III, King of Canada, accompanied by Her Majesty Queen Consort Camilla.
This royal visit to Canada is the latest in a long line of visits by members of the royal family.
As Prince of Wales, His Majesty officially visited Canada 18 times, not counting "technical stops" listed by Heritage Canada, nor private visits, such as holidays.
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has visited Canada on official visits 22 times, not counting other stops. In 1977, she delivered the Speech from the Throne during her visit to the country. Typically, this responsibility falls to the Governor General, who represents the sovereign in Canada. She also visited Canada before her ascension, notably two months in 1951 in the company of His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh.
His Majesty King George VI visited in 1939 before the Second World War. Other sovereigns had visited Canada before their reigns, namely, King Edward VII and King Edward VIII, as Princes of Wales. Also, His Royal Highness the Duke of Kent, father of Her Majesty Queen Victoria, stayed in Canada on military deployment, particularly in Halifax and Quebec City.
His Majesty's visit, at a time of crisis in Canada-U.S. relations, is receiving considerable press coverage in Canada and in the United States, where its symbolic significance has not gone unnoticed.
Such visits are significant opportunities to strengthen ties between the royal family and the Canadian people.
It should be noted that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II made two official trips to the United States in 1957 and 1959 at the request of Conservative Prime Minister the Right Honourable John Diefenbaker.
